Modality 2.0 is a rebuild of the theme, but your site does not need rebuilding. Update as usual in Dashboard → Updates. As with any major update, make a backup first.
What happens when you update
- Your settings are carried over. On the first page load after the update, every Modality setting you had changed is copied to the new options. Settings you never changed use the 2.0 defaults.
- Your site keeps its look. Updated sites get the Classic style preset, which is the original Modality design.
- Menus, widgets, logo and header image stay where they are. Their locations are the same as in 1.x.
- Nothing is deleted. Your 1.x settings stay in the database, and a backup copy is kept, so you can go back to 1.0.5.2 if you ever need to.
A notice in the dashboard confirms the update and tells you how many settings were kept. It also lists any icons that need your attention (see below).
Things that look a little different
- Icons. Modality 2.0 uses a new icon set with a searchable picker. Most Font Awesome icons from 1.x are matched automatically. An icon with no match shows a neutral placeholder until you choose a new one; the update notice names each one.
- HTML in section texts. In 1.x, HTML typed into section texts (for example
<strong>or<br>) showed on the page as plain tags. In 2.0 it is displayed as intended. - The slider. Both 1.x sliders were replaced with one fast, accessible slider. Your slider category, number of slides, speed, effect and caption settings are kept. Posts without a featured image are now skipped instead of showing as empty slides.
- Body text color. If you kept the 1.x default grey (#777777), it becomes a slightly darker grey that is easier to read.
- Copyright text. If you kept the 1.x default (“Copyright 2017 Your Site”), the year now stays current by itself.
What moved where
All settings are still in Appearance → Customize, grouped into four panels. The setting names are the same as in 1.x.
| Modality 1.x section | Modality 2.0 |
|---|---|
| General Settings, Typography Settings, Layout Settings | Theme Style |
| Logo Settings, Header Settings, Navigation Settings | Header & Menu |
| Home Page Settings, Image Slider Settings and each section | Front Page Sections |
| Blog Settings, Social Links, Footer Settings | Blog & Footer |
One 1.x setting changed meaning: an image logo was always shown at Logo Width. In 2.0 that is Image logo width in Header & Menu → Logo Settings, and your 1.x value is copied there.
Trying the new looks
Open Theme Style → Style Preset and click Modern, Light or Bold. The preview changes right away and nothing is saved until you click Publish. Colors and fonts you set yourself keep their value; click Use the preset’s colors everywhere if you want the preset’s full palette.
Going back to 1.x
If something is wrong and you need the old theme back quickly, roll the theme back to 1.0.5.2 with the free WP Rollback plugin, which works for themes from WordPress.org. Your 1.x settings are untouched. Then tell us what went wrong so we can fix it.
