The front page shows no sections
Check Settings → Reading. If the homepage is a static page, that page needs the Modality Front Page template. Then check that the sections are turned on in Front Page Sections → Home Page Settings. See Setting up the front page.
The slider is empty or missing
With Posts with a featured image, only posts that have a featured image are used. Pick an Image Slider Category whose posts have one, or switch to custom slides. A custom slide needs an image.
A feature or box shows a placeholder icon
The icon you had in Modality 1.x has no match in the new icon set. Open the section in the Customizer and pick a new icon in the icon picker.
My colors didn’t change when I switched presets
Colors you set yourself keep their value. Click Use the preset’s colors everywhere under the preset cards to clear them.
The fonts look different from the preview
With local fonts on, the font files are downloaded when you click Publish. If your host blocks that download, fonts load from Google instead. Clear any caching plugin after changing fonts.
My site looks wrong after updating from 1.x
- Clear your caching plugin and your browser cache: the theme’s stylesheets changed.
- Check Theme Style → Style Preset is on Classic.
- If you had custom CSS for 1.x (in Additional CSS or a child theme), it may target class names that no longer exist. Remove it, then re-add only what you still need.
- Still wrong? Tell us with your site address and a screenshot. You can roll back to 1.0.5.2 in the meantime (see Updating from Modality 1.x).
Does Modality work with page builders?
Yes. Use the Page With No Sidebars template for full-width builder pages. Modality is built for the block editor and the Customizer first.
Can I use a child theme?
Yes. Create a child theme with Template: modality in its style.css. Your Customizer settings belong to the theme you activate, so set up the child theme first, or copy the settings over with a plugin such as Customizer Export/Import.
Is Modality accessible?
Modality has a skip link, keyboard-friendly menus and slider, visible focus outlines, labelled icons and buttons, and respects reduced-motion settings. The Modern, Light and Bold presets meet WCAG AA color contrast for text and buttons.
How do I get help?
Ask in the Modality forum on WordPress.org, where we answer too, or see Support. If you’d like the site customized or fixed for you, Hill City Web can help.
